Who is Jesus?

Jesus is the Christ; the Son of the Living God. This might seem like a difficult idea to understand as you might wonder how could the invincible God possibly have a biological son? A simple way to understand Jesus’ identity as the Son of God is that Jesus is God in human form.

“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.

Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.

When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”
Philippians 2:6-8

He shared in our humanity and lived among us. He identified fully with our adversities, sufferings and temptations as humans. He is able to empathize with our weaknesses because He was tempted in every way – yet was without sin. He had deep compassion for people, He identified with the overlooked and marginalized in the society. While he was fully man, he was also fully God. He taught the ways of God, He forgave sins, He healed the sick, He cast out demons, He raised the dead, He spoke of future events and on the third day after he died, He rose from the dead through the working of great power.

Through His words and deeds, Jesus modelled for us the kind of life we are meant to live – one full of love, compassion, grace and power. Jesus is our Friend, our Advocate, our Lord, our King and most importantly – our Redeemer and Saviour.

Why Did He Come?

The name Jesus means “the LORD Saves”. When Jesus was conceived supernaturally, the bible says concerning Jesus “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name JESUS, because he will save his people from their sins.”

It is possible you have heard the word “sin” before but the meaning is vague to you. What exactly is sin, and why is it such a big deal? By the way, what does it have to do with Jesus?

Here is a useful background and context. The first book of the bible (Genesis) tell us that sin was introduced into the world for the first time through the disobedience of Adam and Eve – the first people God created. God told Adam and Eve not to do something, but they did it anyway — and that is exactly what sin is: going against what God wants for our lives. In simple terms, sin is missing the mark of God’s will for our lives and it finds expression in form of disobedience, violating God’s law, twisted and corrupt heart that perverts truth and premediates evil. Sin damages our relationship with God and creates a barrier between us and God. Sin leads to spiritual death, which is separation from God.

The problem is that everyone has sinned! If you have ever wondered why many people have let you down and why there is so much evil in the world. It is simple – no one is perfect. Humans are naturally sinful. The bible says

“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard”Romans 3:23

If humans could save themselves from the captivity of sin, they would have done it long ago. Sadly, we are unable! For this reason, we need a remedy outside of ourselves. We need redemption! The good news is that God had a plan to redeem us from the power of sin and restore our relationship with him once and for all.

“and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith”Romans 3:24

The death of Jesus was part of God’s grand plan to reconcile us back to Himself. As Jesus breathed his last breath on the cross, he proclaimed, “It is finished,” signifying that his mission of redemption was complete. When he died as the only human who has lived a perfect life, He was God’s perfect sacrifice and His blood paid the full price for our sin. Our debt was fully paid!

But Jesus’ death wasn’t the end of the story. Three days later, God raised his Son from the dead, a miracle that forever defeated death and the grave. The Bible says Jesus now stands at the right hand of God the Father, and one day, we can share in his eternal life in heaven. Because of Jesus, we can live in freedom from sin today. That doesn’t mean we’re perfect (faultless) — but it means we’re on a daily journey towards becoming more and more like Jesus.
